It is good to know that first aid and emergency aid are free for foreigners, but you will be billed for any further treatment. State clinics are cheaper than visiting a private doctor’s surgery. Before departure, please check with your health insurance authorities if there is any inter-governmental agreement including mutual health care between our countries. If no such agreement exists, foreign students are advised to take out an insurance policy in Hungary in order to avoid paying big amounts of money for medical treatment. You can join the Voluntary Social Security Group at the local Health Insurance Office by making an insurance contract. It must be renewed monthly (appr. HUF 8,000 ) so it can provide permanent security for the student.
If any health problems arise during your stay, you can visit the university doctor’s surgery/dentistry in hall of residence E/4, groundfloor. Ask someone to go with you to avoid language problems. After a medical check-up the doctor will decide if you need specialised examination or hospital treatment. If so, you will be given a warrant for further examination or hospitalisation.
