PURSUING STUDIES

The university offers its whole range of courses in Hungarian, full 5-year degree courses at the 3 engineering faculties, and a great number of subjects from all faculties in English.

Exchange students

Exchange students can choose subjects from the list under chapter “Subjects taught in English”. The list is subject to changes and modifications. Please note that these subjects will not be instructed in classes, but in the form of individual consultations with the teachers. The final assessment of your studies will be given on the basis of the following elements: consultancy hours, individual project work (individual elaboration of specialised literature) in the departmental or central libraries, submitted interim reports (if requested by the teachers), final report/exam (oral or written). The ECTS is not yet in use in Hungary, and will only be introduced in 2002. At present, there is a 5-scale grading system to assess the students’ achievements: 5 – excellent, 4 – good, 3 – satisfactory, 2- pass, 1 – fail. The subjects chosen to be studied by the student should be indicated on the Learning Agreement so that the International Relations Office staff can make arrangements with the departments concerned.

If you want to brush up your language command in the most widely spoken languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish), you can freely attend language classes delivered to Hungarian students. You can join any group at any level and make friends with Hungarian students through language learning.

Unfortunately, the possibility of learning the Hungarian language cannot be guaranteed for sure in all cases: as it must be arranged with Hungarian language teachers by separate agreements, it always depends on how busy the teachers are and how many students there are at the same time who have the same demand. It might happen that teachers are overloaded or the number of students is too low. In such cases Hungarian courses have to be arranged outside the framework of the university. Staff members of the International Relations Office will help you find a solution.

Fee-paying students on degree courses

Fee-paying students should contact the Office for Foreign Students (see chapter “Contact addresses”) to ask for more information and a separate brochure + application form for English-language degree courses at the 3 engineering faculties.

PhD programmes

The PhD programme usually takes students 3 years to complete. The PhD degree is awarded to graduate students who have completed a prescribed study programme and submitted a research thesis. The main objective of this course is to provide further knowledge for ambitious and talented graduate students within a well defined but narrower field and to develop a capability of reaching scientific results as well as of leading development work in science.

The course consists of two separate parts. The first is course work within which one major and two subsidiary subjects should be studied. The subjects are to be chosen in such a way that they cover the topic of the prospective research thesis. The second part of the PhD course is the research thesis. With the advice and approval of a supervisor, the student will choose one theme for his/her dissertation and at the end of the programme new scientific results are expected to be achieved. The thesis work is designed to take two years for full time students.

Each student is assigned to a scientific supervisor, who is a professor or a holder of a scientific degree. The supervisor assists the candidate in preparing for the examinations and advises him/her in carrying out his/her research. When all prescribed examinations have been passed, and the examination committee has approved the research thesis, the PhD degree can be awarded by the Rector of the university.
