VISA REQUIREMENTS – RESIDENCE PERMIT

Exchange students

If your stay does not exceed 90 days, you will not need a visa. If your stay is going to be longer than 90 days, you have to contact the Hungarian Embassy in your home country and apply for a students visa (T6, TM6, TH5). In all cases, please get the necessary information from the Embassy regarding the type of visa you have to apply for and the requested documents you have to attach to your application. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 more months after the end of your intended stay. If you have your proper student visa, no problem will occur at the police when applying for your residence permit.

To enter the country you need a student visa, which can be obtained from the local Hungarian Embassy. If there is no embassy in your country, you have to contact the nearest one in a neighbouring country. Please note that the student visa is a prerequisite of your residence permit (entering the country with a tourist visa will not be accepted by the police, even if you have a Letter of Acceptance from the university). Contact the embassy before departure and get all necessary information for your visa application. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 12 months after entering Hungary, otherwise your visa application can be refused.

POLICE MATTERS
Exchange students

If your stay does not exceed 30 days, there will be no administrative procedures and you do not have to appear at the police. In case of a stay up to 90 days, you have the obligation to report your address in Hungary at the local police. As all exchange students will be accommodated in the university’s hall of residence, a certificate issued by the International Relations Office will be an adequate document to prove your address.

If your stay exceeds 90 days, you will have to apply for a temporary residence permit at the local police within 30 days after your arrival. You will need the following: students visa, application form, certificate of residence, valid passport, 2 photos, certificate of acceptance by the university, some money to pay procedural fees (appr. HUF 4,000). After submitting the above documents, you can collect your residence permit within a few days.

Fee-paying students on degree courses

Be careful since the student visa is valid only for 15 days after entering Hungary. You will have to apply for a residence permit before your visa expires. Basically, the same application procedure applies to fee-paying students as described above. However, there are some additional requirements too. These are the following: on first arrival, students must go through a compulsory medical check-up. An official medical certificate will be issued by the National Health and Medical Officer’s Service to prove that the student does not suffer from any ailment which endangers public health. You will be charged HUF 14,000 for the check-up.

Fee-paying student will be expected to present an evidence that they possess the necessary financial means for living. This can be certified by

- a certain amount of Hungarian of foreign currency
- bank certificate of a current account at any bank
- financial instruments accepted in Hungary (e.g. cheques, passbooks, etc.)

When all documents are presented and accepted, students will be given a residence permit for one year and it has to be extended time by time at least 2 weeks before its expiry. Please note that the expiry of the residence permit is at least 6 months earlier than that of the passport. If your country has an embassy in Hungary, this period can be shorter.
