Introduction

The instruction of international law was started in 1984 with professor Dr Vanda Lamm, head of department between 1984-1998. The curriculum was based on the traditions of other Hungarian law faculties, however the training structure aimed at preparing students (beside basic principles and introduction to international law) for applying and interpreting international treaties in their legal careers. Students´ attention was focused on the demand to follow the international jurisprudence as well.

Since 1999, professor Péter Kovács (PhD, dr habil) has assumed the direction of the department. Beside his university career, Péter Kovács has also been involved in diplomacy as 1st class secretary of the Hungarian embassy to Paris (1990-1994), member of intergovernmental expert committees of the Council of Europe, drafting the European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages and the Framework-convention for the Protection of National Minorities in Europe & head of the department of Human Rights and Minority law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (1998-1999). Elected in 2005 to the Constitutional Court, he stepped down of the chair but he is still deeply involved in the lecturing program.
