The industrial ties of the University of Miskolc have been strengthened even further with the signing of an agreement with representatives of Ózdi Acélművek Kft (Ózd Steelworks, Ltd.).

In line with government policy for changes in higher education, a 20% share in the steelworks has been transferred from state ownership to the Universitas Miskolcinensis Foundation (which runs UM). On 10 June a syndicate agreement was signed by Dr. Judit Varga, chair of the board of trustees.

The entire region can benefit from this cooperation with the firm and its 80% owner, the Max Aicher Group.  This will provide more opportunities for student internships and hands-on training and can play a role in keeping workers in the region. Dr. Varga stated that it is the intention of the Foundation to assist in keeping the Ózd steelworks at the forefront of the steel industry in Hungary.

Ózd is also a teaching site for UM bachelor-level programmes in materials science, social work and computer science engineering.
