First Announcement

What is this?

The 6th Junior Mathematical Congress - JMC-04 is aimed at students aged 15 through 25 years, with an emphasis on those in the range 15 through 20 years old. During one week in Tg-Mures, Romania the visiting students from all over Europe will be attending seminars and lectures given mainly by the participants themselves, and to a minor part also by invited guests.

History

The series of Junior Mathematical Congresses started in 1992, in Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in Paris for three days. 290 eager students participated, 60 lectured themselves, 30 where guests from 10 different countries other than France. It was initiated as a youth activity to accompany the 1st European Congress of Mathematics, which was held simultaneously in Paris. Four years later, the 2nd European Congress of Mathematics was scheduled in Budapest. Promptly, a group of Hungarian mathematicians arranged for the 2nd Junior Mathematical Congress 1996 to take place in Miskolc, Hungary.

In 1998, the International Congress of Mathematics occurred in Berlin, Germany, whereupon a group of German mathematicians made sure that the 3rd Junior Mathematical Congress could be held in it's immediate vicinity, in Potsdam.

The 3rd European Congress of Mathematics was held in Barcelona in 2000, but some organizatorial problems prevented a Junior Mathematical Congress to occur in Spain, so Peter Körtesi at the University of Miskolc made sure that the 4th Junior Mathematical Congress would take place anyway, in Miskolc.

In 2002, accompanying the Beijing International Congress of Mathematics, the 5th Junior Mathematical Congress takes place in Miskolc as well.
