Short project description:

The FP7 e-SOTER project developed a soil database located in Central Europe, covering the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and the Southern part of Poland. In order to make this novel product operation a through validation procecc has to be carried out. The aim of this project is to support this action with organized joint field data collection campaigns int he four countries to create a harmonized field data based validation dataset for the finalization of the database.

Detailed project description:

The e-SOTER project have a developed several soil data layers for Central Europe as a joint effort of the University of Miskolc and Szent István University from Hungary and the Czech University of Life Sciences using existing profile data and several digital soil mapping techniques. Detailed description of the methodology can be found ont he e-SOTER website (www.esoter.net). This is a novel product to replace the traditional soil maps, and is appropriate to answer specific soil related questions and provide inputs for several interdisciplinary models on a national and ont he regional level. The three contributing institutions would like to publish the dataset and distribute it freely for governmental and civil uses. This process requires a scientific validation and a quantitative assessment and characterization of the dataset. Originally only Hungary and the Czech Republic were presented int he consortium, which we have extended in this project to Slovakia and Poland to achive the full coverage of the region.


Field data harmonization, soil description, and validation database developement requires joint field trips having representatives from all participating countries. The field trip lenght was 5 days each, and each countries have organized one. 20 soil pits per countries were visited and describbed by the team and data is recorded and compiled into a validation dataset.
The dataset is being used for statistical validation and for correcting the potentially emerging problems of the database. Typical correlation and interpretation problems are being discussed and reported in a joint scientific paper. Based on the finding a new version of the dataset is being created and published jointly in the four countries.
