SHORT DESCRIPTION: The objective of the Mikoviny Sámuel Doctoral School of Earth Sciences is to provide a sound scientific foundation for engineering activities requiring fundamental knowledge in earth sciences. The doctoral school carries out activities in those fields of the earth sciences that fit into the profile of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Engineering and that are within the scope of the accreditation granted to the doctoral programme.

SPECIALIZATIONS: PhD students are specialised in their specific field of research in tree main streams: raw materials management including primary mineral resources and waste recycling, water and soil management and energy management. Research fields: Geotechnical Systems and Processes; Fluid Production and Transport Systems; Environmental Processing and Raw Material Preparation; Research in Applied Geophysics; Research on Applied Geology and Hydrogeology; Physical and Human Geography.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION: 

During the entrance exam 100 points can be obtained. The minimum score for the admission is 60 points, which is only a compulsory precondition, therefore it doesn’t mean automatic admission. Letter of acceptance signed by the supervisor(s) and SH faculty coordinator is compulsory precondition, otherwise, the admission procedure cannot be continued.

Factors that are considered during the selection process:
a) Professional background (official transcript, degree, general professional knowledge and skill demonstration in the entrance examination) max 35 points,
b) Research skills (previous experience in research, research plan, its demonstration in the entrance examination) max 35 points,
c) Language skills (language examination certificates, the quality of replies in English during the entrance examination) max 20 points,
d) Journal articles, papers and other scientific activities: max 10 points.


A detailed Research Proposal must be handed in with the following structure:
a) Description of the research field, problem formulation (Define a clear question and approach to answering it. Highlight its originality and/or significance)
b) Literature review. Explain how the research problem adds to, develops (or challenges) existing literature in the field,
c) Develop research hypothesis, Propose research methodology and list expected results,
d) Scheduling the research (Gantt-diagram).

CAREER PROSPECTS: Specialists from the Doctoral School with the PhD degree are welcome in university departments, research institutes as well as in research and development divisions of companies from the resources industry.
