When did you start your studies and why did you choose the University of Miskolc?

I started my studies at the University of Miskolc in 2024. I chose the university because of its strong focus on Earth Sciences, hands-on research opportunities, and international learning environment that aligns with my goals in groundwater, oil and gas and reservoir studies.

What was your first impression when you arrived in Hungary? Did you notice any cultural differences?

My first impression of Hungary was that it’s a peaceful and organized country with a rich cultural heritage. I immediately noticed differences in communication style; people are more reserved compared to where I’m from, and time management is taken very seriously. But over time, I’ve come to appreciate the structure and calmness of the environment.

What are/were your biggest challenges during your studies and how did you overcome these challenges?

One of my biggest challenges was adapting to a new academic system and language environment. At first, it was difficult to adjust to the teaching style and expectations. I overcame this by actively seeking support from lecturers, joining study groups, and dedicating extra time to independent learning. With time, I became more confident and better integrated academically.

In your opinion, what makes the University of Miskolc stand out among other Hungarian universities?

In my opinion, the University of Miskolc stands out for its strong focus on applied research, especially in Earth Sciences and Engineering. I especially value the friendships I built through study groups and on-campus activities; it really feels like a home away from home.

What kinds of activities, programmes or student organizations have you taken part in during your studies at the university?

During my studies at the University of Miskolc, I actively participated in international student events, academic conferences like the ISZA, MFK Conference, TDK and OTDK, and served as the International Student Ambassador. Do you and other students from your country (or similar cultural background) keep any of your traditions while living in Miskolc? If yes, can you give an example?

Yes, we do. As Nigerian students in Miskolc, we often celebrate our national holidays like Independence Day by organizing cultural evenings with traditional food, music, and attire. We also come together for prayer meetings, cook Nigerian meals like jollof rice, and support each other like family especially during festive seasons like Christmas and Easter.
