Health insurance

  • It is highly recommended for all international students to take out travel and health insurance in their home country for their travel and for a few weeks after arrival just to stay on the safe side.
If you are an exchange student from the EU,

you can use your European Health Insurance Card for emergency medical care free of charge, which you should obtain before departure from your home country.

If you are an exchange student from a non-EU country,

you must have valid insurance from your home country. This means that you will have to pay for medical treatment in Hungary but your insurance company in your home country will refund your costs based on the invoice you receive at the hospital/GP.  It is also possible to take out private health insurance in Hungary. Please contact the International Relations Office if you need assistance with this.

If you are a state scholarship holder degree student,

you are entitled to the services of the Hungarian health care system and a private insurance company free of charge. International Office colleagues will arrange both types of insurance for you.

If you are a self-financing / non-state scholarship holder degree student,

you must take out private medical insurance at your own expense for your entire stay in Hungary. The International Relations Office can assist you with this during your academic registration.

Please note that it is compulsory for everyone to hold valid medical insurance and it is a pre-condition for maintaining your student status.
