What was your first impression when you arrived in Hungary? Did you notice any cultural differences?
When I first arrived in Hungary, everything felt quite different: the language, customs, and slower pace of life took some getting used to. At first, it was a bit overwhelming, especially adjusting to the more reserved nature of people. What stood out most was Hungary’s rich history, visible in its architecture and traditions, which gives the country a unique and fascinating character. Experiencing this culture firsthand has been both challenging and rewarding, helping me grow personally and academically.
What are/were your biggest challenges during your studies and how did you overcome these challenges?
One of the hardest things during my studies was adjusting to a new academic system and feeling homesick while being far away from my family and friends. Making friends from all over the world really helped me feel less alone and more connected. Having that support made a big difference. I also leaned on my professors and classmates when I needed help and worked on managing my time between research, classes, and life.
In your opinion, what makes the University of Miskolc stand out among other Hungarian universities?
What I appreciate most about the University of Miskolc is its balance between tradition and innovation. There’s a respect for history and culture here, but also a strong drive toward innovative research and sustainability. The campus community also is welcoming. A lot of international events are being organized by the university which helps students from all over feel included and supported throughout their studies.

I like the peaceful green spaces where I can always take a break and recharge. The variety of sports facilities, from tennis courts to a swimming pool, encouraged me to have a healthier lifestyle. Also, having everything I need close by, like the dorms, cafeterias and supermarkets, really helps create a comfortable environment where I can focus on my studies but also enjoy my time here.
What kinds of activities, programmes or student organizations have you taken part in during your studies at the university?
I have enjoyed participating in events that celebrate cultural diversity, especially International Day. One of the most memorable moments for me was joining the traditional iftar dinner during Ramadan, where we came together to break the fast and connect on a deeper cultural level. These experiences have made my time at the university more rewarding and memorable.
What are the places and activities that an international student should definitely visit or try in Miskolc?
What I like most about Miskolc is how close it is to nature, especially places like Lillafüred with its beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails, and Miskolctapolca with its unique cave bath. I also enjoy the cozy downtown, local food, and the chance to meet people through student events.
Do you and other students from your country (or similar cultural background) keep any of your traditions while living in Miskolc? If yes, can you give an example?
