Thanks to the generous support of the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund’s MECENATÚRA grant, this large-scale event, taking place between September 1 and 4, aims to provide a distinctly interdisciplinary discussion of one of the key issues in contemporary philosophy. Namely, to explore the nature and significance of “events,” their place in reality, their transformative effects, and the various ways in which they are mediated, as well as to rethink the philosophies and related scientific approaches that aim to outline these issues—which are represented in many ways in both the analytical and continental philosophical traditions—from various systematic and historical perspectives.

Participants and speakers from twenty countries attended the conference: Austria, the Czech Republic, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Greece, the Netherlands, India, Israel, Canada, China, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey. In her message sent to the opening of the conference, the rector of the University of Miskolc, Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, called it an honor that numerous European partner universities were represented at the conference discussing the interdisciplinary connections of contemporary philosophy, which provides an opportunity to expand international professional relationships and seek new opportunities for cooperation. In his welcoming speech, Dr. Károly Kocsis, president of the Miskolc Academic Committee, highlighted the conference’s contribution to the understanding of philosophical problems, while Dr. Erika Senviczki, city clerk of Miskolc, emphasized the importance of joint thinking in the development of science.

The conference chair, Prof. Dr. Miklós Nyírő, spoke about the program “EVENT and its mediation,” saying that the conference consisted of five plenary lectures and parallel sessions. The target audience consists of members of the international and domestic professional community working in a wide variety of fields of philosophy and other disciplines, as well as doctoral students. Renowned plenary speakers, who are among the most prominent international experts on the topic, were invited to the meeting. The open lecture of the conference will be given by Professor Gert-Jan van der Heiden (Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands). Other invited plenary speakers include Claude Romano (Sorbonne University), winner of the Grand Prix de Philosophie, Gaetano Chiurazzi (University of Turin), François Raffoul (Louisiana State University), and Daniela Vallega-Neu (University of Oregon).

The conference provides members of the Hungarian professional community with an opportunity to present their findings and publish them alongside renowned authors. The publication of the presentations as an open-access electronic publication is expected to make the event a significant international occasion in the field.

The event is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Innovation from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund and is part of the “200 Years of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences” anniversary program.
