With the participation of Hungarian and international experts, the Faculty of Law of the University of Miskolc, the Central European Academy, and Heidelberg University – with the support of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – jointly organized the conference “Green Compliance – Environmental Responsibility from a Criminal Law Perspective.”
The conference featured presentations on various aspects of green compliance, including the environmental law approach to corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) responsibilities, the perspective of the Hungarian National Bank representing the domestic financial sector, consumer protection issues related to “greenwashing” businesses, and the criminal law implications of environmental and climate protection.
Environmental law emerged as an independent discipline at the Faculty of Law in Miskolc twenty years ago. Cooperation and partnership play a key role in the development of this field — something strongly supported by a joint project with Heidelberg University, launched five years ago with backing from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Among the project’s shared goals are fundamental research focusing on the criminal liability of companies and enterprises, as well as responses in criminal policy to technological and societal changes. The partnership seeks to bring global challenges to the forefront of public discourse, offering impulses that can influence national legislation through international environmental law — stated Prof. Dr. Gerhard Dannecker, professor at Heidelberg University and leader of the “Institutspartnerschaftprojekt,” during the opening of the 5th Humboldt Conference.
The Institutes of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Miskolc and the Faculty of Law of Heidelberg University launched the joint project titled “Zur Systematisierung der strafrechtlichen Verantwortung von und in Unternehmen” (“Systematizing the Criminal Liability of and within Companies”) within the framework of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s ALUMNI Program.
The aim of the project is to continue fundamental research focusing on the criminal liability of corporations and businesses, while also outlining criminal policy responses to technological and societal changes.
The project, which began on 1 July 2020, will conclude on 30 June 2025. As part of the institutional partnership supported by the Humboldt Foundation, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Miskolc have jointly organized annual conferences. The opening and closing international conferences are hosted by the Faculty of Law at the University of Miskolc. A volume compiling the presentations given at the conferences will be published. Additionally, faculty members from the Miskolc Faculty of Law participating in the project receive one-month research scholarships at the University of Heidelberg. Project leaders: Prof. Dr. Gerhard Dannecker (University of Heidelberg), Prof. Dr. Judit Jacsó (University of Miskolc, member of the Humboldt ALUMNI network).
