Hungarian-Chinese dual degree in chemical engineering – a new model for education and innovation

The University of Miskolc and the Beijing University of Chemical Technology have announced the launch of double degree programs. According to the plans, the courses, which will start in September 2026, will cover the basic subjects of chemical engineering and mechanical engineering, with two academic years in Miskolc and two in Beijing. The significant presence of Chinese working capital since 2010 has given Miskolc and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén a unique character. Significant production capacities have been created in the chemical and engineering industries, with the investment by the Wanhua industrial group, which acquired BorsodChem in Kazincbarcika, being one of the most significant.

Now known as Wanhua-BorsodChem Industrial Holding, the county’s main industrial producer and employer has become a strategic dual training and research partner of the University of Miskolc, and also played a role in the establishment of the Confucius Institute in Miskolc in September 2013 , recalled Dr. Roland Szilágyi, Vice-Rector of the University of Miskolc, at a press conference held to announce the launch of the dual degree program. He recalled that, following the establishment of cultural relations, the University of Miskolc and the Beijing University of Chemical Technology began joint training development, which resulted in the launch of dual degree programs in chemical engineering and mechanical engineering. According to the universities’ plans, starting in the 2026 academic year, students will be able to acquire competitive knowledge and qualifications by studying in Miskolc and China.

Wanhua-BorsodChem is a key partner in the launch of the program, offering significant scholarships, practical knowledge, and ultimately jobs to those participating in the program,

said Dr. Roland Szilágyi.

In his welcoming speech, Prof. Su Haijia, Vice President of Beijing University of Chemical Technology, highlighted the uniqueness of the new tripartite cooperation model involving the two higher education institutions and the large chemical company in the context of dual degree programs. In his opinion, this

opens up broader horizons not only for education but also for industrial innovation activities and joint research projects.

He provided details about the program, saying that the selection of the first students who will be able to study under this model starting in September 2026 will begin in March 2026.

Béla Varga, Vice President of Wanhua–BorsodChem Zrt., spoke about the company’s strategy of supporting the training of chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineers, adding that Hungarian-Chinese educational ties enhance the reputation of engineering education in Miskolc. The University of Miskolc provides a high-quality background, research and laboratory capacity for this, added Prof. Dr. Péter Baumli, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering, while Prof. Dr. Zoltán Siménfalvi, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Information Technology, highlighted the opportunities inherent in professional knowledge spanning faculties and countries, which fits in with the focus areas of the University of Miskolc’s education and research strategy.
