Hungarian–Malaysian Intercultural Initiatives

The University of Miskolc has renewed its cooperation agreement with Sunway University in Malaysia, paving the way for continued collaboration on intercultural video projects involving students from the Department of English Linguistics and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. These projects aim to enhance students’ intercultural awareness and competence.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, Rector of the University of Miskolc, and Dr. Nicholas Lee, Head of the Centre for English Language Studies at Sunway University.

In 2025, the intercultural video project received the Gold Award in the category of Sustainable and Inclusive Educational Projects in the “Teaching and Learning Innovation Challenge” hosted by Sunway University. Plans for the next five years include the development of joint courses, fostering collaborative research and publication involving faculty from both institutions, and promoting student mobility through internships and short-term study visits.

At the signing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth emphasized that the partnership focuses on developing skills within humanities education in Miskolc that support students’ success in the job market. She noted that Sunway University brings a multicultural perspective and globally recognized academic and educational culture that fosters the sharing of best practices and educational innovations.

Representing Sunway University, Dr. Nicholas Lee highlighted the importance of leveraging internationalization to enable knowledge exchange and to cultivate global awareness among both students and faculty.

As part of the official visit, Dr. Nicholas Lee and Dr. Tamás Kiss, Associate Professor at Sunway University’s Centre for English Language Studies, delivered a public lecture on the importance of intercultural competence, mindful communication, and conflict resolution in multicultural workplaces. They illustrated misunderstandings stemming from differing communication expectations with entertaining and thought-provoking examples, offering strategies for effective resolution.
