Anyone who attends the University of Miskolc is bound to encounter the student traditions of Selmec in some way. Those who learn about this extremely diverse set of traditions through the objects and relics on display in the gallery of the glass lobby of the University of Miskolc can get a glimpse of the aspects of these traditions that are still alive today.

The development of student traditions

The student traditions cultivated at the University of Miskolc date back to the founding of the Alma Mater and its predecessor, the Berg Schola (Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Selmecbánya) in 1735. Many elements of student life date back to this period and have been preserved mainly in student songs, whose roots are linked to the German universities of the time and the mining community around Selmecbánya. However, most of the customs in their present form developed in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

After leaving Selmecbánya (1919) and then Sopron (1952, 1959), the cultivation of student traditions fell into oblivion for a few years for political reasons, but since the 1970s they have been enjoying a renaissance.

Professional parties

Professional parties are an important part of student life. These are gatherings where students can discuss serious or light-hearted, professional or friendly issues within a regulated framework, while also enjoying themselves in a civilized manner.

One of the most characteristic accessories of professional parties is the mug. On the one hand, it is used for drinking the official beverage (beer or wine), and on the other hand, it serves as a souvenir, as most professional parties have their own official, unique mug made in their honor, commemorating the given professional party.

Valétálás

Perhaps one of the most beautiful parts of student traditions is valétálás, or the farewell of graduating students from the university. This is a series of events consisting of several stages. It begins with the Ribbon Ceremony/Ribbon Pinning Ceremony, where students receive the armbands they will wear throughout their studies until graduation.

After the students have successfully passed their final exams, the last and most spectacular part of the graduation ceremony is the Salamander Ceremony, when the graduates say goodbye not only to the university but also to the city. Their ceremonial procession passes through the center of Miskolc. The procession is led by students carrying miner’s lamps, followed by the university and faculty leaders and the graduating students carrying torches. They march singing Selmec songs to pass the baton to the younger generation following them.

Although the graduation ceremony and many of its elements originated in Selmecbánya, they have now become widespread throughout the country, as have the ribbon ceremony and the singing of the songs “Ballag már a vén diák” (The Old Student is Graduating) and “Gaudeamus.”

Student traditions after university

Selmeci traditions form a bond between university citizens that extends beyond their years at university, with many continuing to actively participate in preserving these traditions even after entering the workforce.

One of the most important forums for their community is the National Hungarian Mining and Metallurgical Association (OMBKE), which, in addition to representing their interests, pays special attention to supporting student life and passing on traditions.

The association’s activities are organized by the Selmec Mining and Metallurgical Association, which is responsible for organizing the annual Selmec Day celebrations.
