With government support, two dormitories and a restaurant combined with an event venue were renovated at the University of Miskolc, and a family-friendly building housing a nursery and apartments was also constructed.
The official, ceremonial handover of the infrastructure upgrades completed by autumn 2025, the restaurant and event venue complex, the renovated E/3 and E/4 dormitories, and the family-friendly building that also houses the nursery took place on October 14.
In her welcoming speech, Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, rector of the institution, said that since 2020, the university has managed to implement nearly 50 billion forints worth of developments. She emphasized that she considers it important for the university to focus on physical construction in addition to intellectual development, as students can only truly develop if they feel comfortable, and university staff can only do quality work if they can work in an inspiring environment.
Every building serves higher strategic goals,
said the rector, adding that
when we build, we think not only of ourselves but also of future generations.
In his short speech, András Hollósy, Deputy Mayor of Miskolc, emphasized that the university and the city of Miskolc are working hand in hand:
At that time, the University of Miskolc served the Steel City, and now, with new strategic ideas and a new vision, it also serves the city of Bükk. The city of Miskolc is a partner to the university in everything,
he said.
Balázs Hankó, Minister of Culture and Innovation at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, said at the ceremony:
We are proud that Hungarian universities have become bastions of international knowledge, as their scientific performance in the most prestigious international rankings has increased by 48 percent in three years. The University of Miskolc has achieved an 80 percent increase in scientific performance over the past three years.
The minister announced that today, every second university student begins their studies at a rural university, and the University of Miskolc has doubled its enrollment over the past three years, reaching 4,000 students this year.
The minister also said that one of the most important elements of the university and competitiveness is that it should be good to be a university student, and this requires a community, a community space, and infrastructure, which needs to be developed. Thanks to these developments, a community-building, family-friendly, sporty, smart, and green campus has been created at the University of Miskolc. At the end of his speech, the minister handed over the symbolic keys to the renovated buildings to the rector.
