When did you start your studies and why did you choose the University of Miskolc?
I started my PhD studies in the Faculty of Earth Science at the University of Miskolc in the academic year 2024/2025. I chose this university because of its strong academic foundation in geosciences, particularly in the field of Geophysics, which is my area of specialization. The university offers a well-structured doctoral program, access to experienced researchers, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
What was your first impression when you arrived in Hungary? Did you notice any cultural differences?
My first impression of Hungary was that it’s a peaceful and well-organized country with beautiful architecture. I noticed people are generally reserved but polite. The pace of life felt calmer compared to what I was used to.
What are/were your biggest challenges during your studies and how did you overcome these challenges?
One of my biggest challenges was adapting to a new academic system and language environment. I overcame this by staying organized, seeking help when needed, and consistently improving my communication skills. Support from my supervisors also made a big difference.
In your opinion, what makes the University of Miskolc stand out among other Hungarian universities?
The University of Miskolc stands out for its strong focus on applied research and industry collaboration. It also offers a peaceful study environment with a close-knit academic community. The support from faculty members is both professional and personal.
What do you like the most about campus life at the University of Miskolc?
I appreciate the friendly and supportive atmosphere on campus, where it’s easy to connect with fellow students and faculty. The campus facilities, especially the modern laboratories and study spaces, are excellent. I also enjoy the variety of cultural and academic events that make student life engaging and dynamic.
What kinds of activities, programmes or student organizations have you taken part in during your studies at the university?
I have participated in the EAGE student chapter, where we collaborate on projects and attend seminars. I also joined language and culture exchange meetups in Koszimi to improve my Hungarian and connect with international students.
What are the places and activities that an international student should definitely visit or try in Miskolc?
I think every international student should visit Miskolctapolca, especially the cave bath — it’s a unique and relaxing experience. Lillafüred is also a must-see with its lake, waterfall, and forest train. The city center is great for trying local Hungarian food and enjoying the cozy cafés and bars.
Do you and other students from your country (or similar cultural background) keep any of your traditions while living in Miskolc? If yes, can you give an example?
Yes, we try to keep some of our cultural traditions while living in Miskolc. For example, we celebrate our national holidays together by cooking traditional food and gathering as a community. It helps us feel more connected to home and share our culture with others.
What skills and benefits have you already gained from studying at the University of Miskolc?
I have gained strong research and analytical skills in geophysics through both coursework and lab work. Studying here has also improved my academic writing and presentation abilities. Additionally, I’ve learned to work in a multicultural environment, which is a valuable experience.
What kind of academic support have you received from the university or your faculty?
I have received dedicated guidance from my PhD supervisor and his research team through regular meetings and technical feedback. The faculty offers workshops on experimental methods, software tools, and academic writing, which helped me build essential skills. Additionally, I had access to modern labs and databases, making my research much more effective.
How do you think your degree of the University of Miskolc will help you in your life and career?
My PhD from the University of Miskolc will strengthen my expertise in geophysics and open opportunities in both academia and industry. It also proves my ability to work independently and solve complex problems. This degree gives me both credibility and confidence for an international career.
What is the most important thing or advice you would recommend to active/future students of the University of Miskolc?
Stay open to new experiences and make the most of the university’s academic and cultural opportunities. Don’t hesitate to ask for help — professors and staff are very supportive. And finally, try to balance your studies with social life to enjoy your time here fully.
If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and how would you use it to help active/future students of the University of Miskolc?
I would choose the ability to speak and understand every language instantly. This would help international students feel more connected, overcome language barriers, and integrate more easily into academic and social life. It would create a truly inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
