Raw materials researchers representing Miskolc win Innovation Special Prize at global competition

A team of international students from the University of Miskolc’s College of Natural Resource Research and Utilization won a special innovation award at the New Generation Exploration Award, a global competition for raw material researchers, for their project entitled “Deep learning meets earth science.” The members of the “Rockers Team,” competing under the colors of Miskolc, are studying in the university’s TIMREX international training program.

The New Generation Exploration Award is the most prestigious competition for mineral exploration projects, organized by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. Twenty-three university teams participated in the 2026 world competition. The six finalists from Miskolc were invited to the congress in Toronto to compete in the finals. They competed against teams from the University of Kinshasa (DR Congo), a joint team from the universities of Riyadh and Cuzco (Saudi Arabia, Peru), as well as teams from Brazil, Peru, and Brazil-Peru for the recognition of the top leaders in the raw materials exploration profession.

Europe was represented solely by the University of Miskolc. The Rocker Team, formed by students from the international training program of the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, presented a project entitled Deep Learning Meets Geoscience. CNN, ANP and Multisource data for Mineral Perspectivity Mapping of Irish type Deposits, Republic of Ireland (Deep learning meets earth science. CNN, ANP and data from multiple sources for mapping the mineral perspective of Irish-type deposits in the Republic of Ireland.

Behind the utopian title, modern information processing technologies optimized for geology and geophysics are used to predict raw material resources in the sample area in Ireland. The Miskolc team won the competition’s Special Innovation Award with their project. The students’ preparers and mentors were Dr. Ferenc Mádai and Prof. Dr. Norbert Péter Szabó, lecturers at the Institute of Earth Sciences for Raw Materials Research, Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences.
