Nearly 80 higher education institutions from around the world applied to open a King Sejong Institute in 2025, and 11 of them received funding – three from Europe, including the University of Miskolc. The aim of the institutes is to promote and disseminate South Korean language and culture, teach the Korean language, develop cultural relations, and raise awareness of South Korean civilization and traditions, thereby creating a community that knows and understands South Korea. In addition to language training, the institute organizes cultural and academic programs, makes teaching materials and publications available, and provides advice to help promote South Korean language and culture.

The King Sejong Institute, which will officially open at the University of Miskolc in September, is located in the university town building of the county archives. Two beginner-level Korean language courses will start here on September 17 during the fall semester. The free training is open to anyone interested: university students, high school students, and adults can all join. The goal is for participants to learn the Korean writing system (Hangul) and the basics of everyday communication, as well as to gain insight into Korean culture.

University students can now register for the course “Sejong Korean Language – Beginners” in Neptun.

The courses, held on Wednesdays and Fridays between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., are based on the internationally recognized Sejong Korean textbook. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, students can gradually acquire language skills, and there is also the option of joining online.

At the end of the course, participants take an exam consisting of four parts: listening comprehension, speaking, reading comprehension, and writing. Only those who have attended at least 70 percent of the classes during the semester are eligible to take the exam. After passing the exam, the course ends with a closing ceremony, where participants receive a certificate of completion for the semester.
