The alginate – aka oil shale – database has arrived in Miskolc

Retired geologist Dr. Gábor Solti handed over his Alginit data collection to the University of Miskolc during an intimate ceremony. The database, containing more than 500 documents, will strengthen the educational and research activities of the Faculty of Engineering, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Alginite is a young, organic-rich freshwater sedimentary rock. It was discovered in Hungary in the 1970s by geologists from the Hungarian Geological Institute. Among them, Dr. Gábor Solti was the one who studied this raw material source, which has now become a prominent national treasure, in the greatest detail. It is produced in two locations in the country – the mines of Pula and Gérce – as a humus-replacing soil improver.

On behalf of the University of Miskolc, the donation agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, Rector, who was represented at the ceremony by Dr. István Szunyog, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Also attending the ceremony were Dr. Marianna Vadászi, associate professor, and Dr. Szilágyiné Dr. Szilvia Sebők, research fellow at the Institute of Applied Earth Sciences at the University of Miskolc, representing the alginate research group. The donated data collection will be processed by the research group—teachers and students—for other applications, including the exploration of natural hydrogen production.
