The University of Miskolc has won nearly HUF 400 million in funding from the HU-HORIZON International Excellence Research Cooperation Program for its project entitled “Integrated exploitation of critical raw materials and geothermal potential in the Pannonian Basin.”
The funding will enable the university to support outstanding research work and strengthen scientific ties with Kosice (Technical University of Kosice), Leoben (Montanuniversität Leoben), and Rome (Spaienza University of Rome), which are key partners of the University of Miskolc, said Prof. Dr. Péter Szűcs, professional leader and vice-rector for innovation and science at the University of Miskolc, assessing the significance of the winning application.
The aim of the HU-RIZONT International Excellence Research Cooperation Program, announced by the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund, is to provide support for projects carried out in international cooperation under the leadership of Hungarian higher education institutions, which, in line with the focus areas of the Neumann János Program, and seek innovative solutions to challenges that are relevant and topical for the Hungarian and international communities.
According to the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, 133 grant applications were received for the call for proposals that closed in May 2025, with a total funding requirement of over HUF 52 billion 143 million, of which, based on the decision of the funding body, 23 applications , including the University of Miskolc, received a total of HUF 8 billion 583 million in non-repayable grants from the NKFI Fund.
