An Earth Day Garden is opening in the old auditorium of the main building at the University of Miskolc, evoking the highly successful exhibition first held in 2022 with even more live plants, even more colors, and an even more immersive experience of nature.
The highlight of this garden installation, created under the motto “The Voice of Nature,” are the terrariums housed in retro soda bottles, flasks, and 50-liter demijohns. These are mini-ecosystems that can survive for years without any care.
The “botanical garden,” representing the wonders of living nature, will be on display within the university’s walls for a few weeks; after that, most of the plants will find a new home in the open air at University City Park.
The Earth Day Garden is not only visually striking but also aims to be inspiring: it demonstrates how to think creatively and sustainably about nature and the objects around us. With this in mind, a cardboard furniture design competition was announced for university students. According to the guidelines, participants were required to design and build a piece of seating capable of supporting 80 kilograms or a table capable of supporting 25 kilograms using recycled cardboard. The finished pieces of furniture will be displayed in the garden, where a professional jury, along with the public, will evaluate the submitted entries. The results will be announced at the garden’s official opening ceremony on April 22 at 11 a.m.
