In the family-friendly operations category, the University of Miskolc received the University of the Year 2026 award. The title came with a cash prize, which the institution must use for student-related purposes.
Higher education institutions could compete for the University of the Year award in 12 categories: charity, sports, sustainability, successful admissions campaigns, practice-oriented education, student career development, student-friendly operations, innovation, culture, internationalization, family-friendly policies, and mental health support.
The University of Miskolc was nominated in the categories of support for culture and the arts, sports university, and family-friendly operations. In the latter category, the University of Szeged and the University of Pécs were also nominated. The university’s leadership and representatives of the student government attended the awards ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Gödöllő.
The University of Miskolc supports all students who balance their studies with work or family responsibilities through flexible curricula, individualized study plans, and social and equal opportunity support. Students with children are supported by tailored administrative procedures, mentoring, and equitable opportunities, while community programs are also open to family members. A mother-and-baby room, a renovated daycare center, and recognized family-friendly initiatives round out this approach.
We are very happy and proud of this recognition, which shows that all the work we do for the university is visible to the outside world,
said Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, the institution’s rector.
The following institutions were recognized as the best in their respective categories at the University of the Year 2026 awards ceremony:
In addition to the university awards, István Csernicskó, rector of the II. Ferenc Rákóczi Hungarian University of Transcarpathia, and Béla Merkely, rector of Semmelweis University, received special ministerial awards.
