In the 2026 world rankings recently released by UI GreenMetric—which evaluates the world’s leading institutions of higher education in terms of sustainability—the University of Miskolc was ranked 1,335th, representing a rise of more than 200 places compared to last year’s result.
In 2010, Universitas Indonesia (UI) launched a global university ranking—known as the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings until 2025—to assess universities’ sustainability efforts. The ranking was designed as an online survey with the aim of contributing to the academic discourse on sustainability in higher education and campus greening, and to promote university-led social change toward achieving sustainability goals. In a broader sense, the rankings are based on a conceptual framework of environment, economy, and equity; its categories, metrics, and weightings have been designed to be understandable to a wide range of stakeholders.
Starting in 2026, the rankings will be published under the name UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings. This year’s key theme is “Promoting Sustainable Campuses through Governance, Digitalization, and Integrated Performance.” This highlights how universities strengthen sustainability through effective governance structures, transparent leadership, and accountable policies.
The recently published UI GreenMetric 2026 Sustainable University Rankings evaluate 2,016 institutions from 110 countries. The rankings include 15 Hungarian higher education institutions, among them the University of Miskolc, which was ranked 11th nationally and 1,335th globally. The latter represents a rise of more than 200 places compared to last year’s results, marking the first achievement of the Sustainability Council established at the University of Miskolc.
