Higher education institutions could apply for the University of the Year award for the 2024/2025 academic year in eight categories: sport, student-friendly initiatives, admissions campaigns, charitable activities, culture and arts, family-friendly policies, internationalization, and innovation. The University of Miskolc was nominated in the categories of culture and arts support, as well as charitable activities. In the latter category, the other nominees were Eszterházy Károly Catholic University in Eger and Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Budapest.
This is a tremendous recognition for us. We are proud of the university, its staff, students, and the entire community, as this award rightfully belongs to them.
– stated László Fükő, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Universitas Miskolcinensis Foundation, at the award ceremony held in the Várkert Bazár.
The nominees were selected from among 64 higher education institutions across the country, and the winners were chosen from three or four universities per category.
It is important that we engage in supportive activities to the best of our ability. We aim to assist our students in need and various social groups. Our donation drives are especially important, as they allow us to help where the need is greatest. We truly take social responsibility and third mission activities seriously. I am glad that our work has been acknowledged through this award.
– said Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, Rector of the University of Miskolc.
In recognition of the activities and efforts of higher education institutions, the University of the Year award was established in 2025 by Dr. Balázs Hankó, Minister for Culture and Innovation.
At the award ceremony, he stated that in the renewed Hungarian higher education system, competition and performance have become paramount, along with dedication to the nation, the interests of the Hungarian economy, and supporting the success of young people.
We thank our universities and the key leaders of our social and economic life for setting us on the path of renewal five years ago,
– he added.
The minister emphasized that, as a result of these efforts, Hungarian universities are advancing in international rankings. One of our universities is now among the top 1% globally, three are in the top 2%, and twelve are in the top 5%.
