The Chemical Industry Career Day (VEPONA) was organized for the eighth time by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Information Technology and the Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering at the University of Miskolc, in collaboration with MOL Petrochemicals, Wanhua BorsodChem, and the KISS Group.
ey players in the domestic chemical industry are based in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, meaning that the region offers outstanding opportunities in this field—both from a corporate perspective and in terms of secondary and higher education—that are unmatched nationwide.
Organized in collaboration with the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BOKIK)—which was established nearly a decade ago at the initiative of chemical companies—the event drew significant interest again this year: nearly 600 middle and high school students from nearly 30 educational institutions in the county arrived in University Town.
The chemical industry career orientation day also demonstrates that the University of Miskolc can effectively contribute to the appropriate training of interested, motivated young people and to their employment following their education,
said Prof. Dr. Zita Horváth, Rector of the University of Miskolc, at the event’s opening. She added that the university maintains active relationships with chemical companies in the region that are recognized both nationally and internationally. “Anyone who earns a degree in the chemical industry in Miskolc is sure to land a well-paying job,” she added.
For MOL Petrochemicals, it is a strategic goal to secure its next generation of professionals in as many ways as possible. To this end, it has established a dual training system for high schools and universities and maintains relationships with numerous elementary schools. “It is important to reach out to young people as early as possible and draw their attention to the interesting aspects and appeal of careers in the chemical industry,” said Péter Mezzey, the company’s production director. As he noted, they were pleased to once again provide an opportunity for students to participate in the career orientation day, where they could meet MOL Petrochemicals’ dual-track students and gain firsthand experience of the opportunities offered by MOL Petrochemicals through professional demonstrations and experiments.
One of the main goals of the Chemical Industry Career Day is to promote careers in the natural sciences, with a particular focus on the diversity and future directions of the chemical industry. According to Wanhua BorsodChem Zrt., the event provides an opportunity for companies to demonstrate that the chemical industry is not only about innovative and sustainable solutions for the future, but also offers outstanding career paths. Although this profession requires serious, competitive expertise, the joint efforts of the companies and educational institutions involved promote the technological development that shapes the region’s economy and our daily lives, they stated.
The KISS Group is convinced that it is particularly important today for businesses and economic actors to ensure a long-term supply of well-trained, forward-thinking professionals.
Our group has been actively involved in vocational training for nearly twenty years, employing an average of 80 students annually under vocational training contracts. All of this would be unimaginable without close cooperation between educational institutions and businesses, as well as the joint definition and implementation of educational tasks,
– explained Pál Tamás Kiss, production unit manager. “The career orientation day is an important element of this complex task, aimed at providing participating students with an authentic yet inspiring picture of the chemical industry, the knowledge required for it, its diversity and requirements, as well as the social and economic significance of work in this field.”
